How to Maintain Cutting Boards
Regular maintenance is very important to keep your cutting boards in optimal condition. Cutting boards take a beating from knives and food oils. Over time the board will start to look dull and scratched up.
It is easy to replenish your boards natural beauty by using a board oil or butcher block wax.
We make our own house blend of conditioner here at SugarTree Woodwerks, but it is easy to make your own as well. Check out my recipe and how to make it here.
First Prep the Board
First step is to clean the board with warm soapy water. This will move any oils and residue from you board. Dry the board with a towel and let it air dry Also never ever wash your wooden cutting board in the dishwasher. This will ruin your board.
Once your board is good and dry, it is time to apply the board conditioner.
Second Step Wax it
When your board is dry. take a glob of sugartree sap and rub it on the wood. Work in small circles. Really rub it in, allowing the wood to absorb the oil.
Let the waxed board sit for 15 minutes. The wood will be soaking up the oil, while the wax hardens.
Finally Buff it Out
With a dry cloth wipe off the excess wax. Then buff the board until the wax has coated evenly, leaving you with a smooth shiny surface.
That’s all there is to it
Regular cuttingboard reconditioning will protect it from moisture. Moisture will bead right up. Your knives will thank you as well, as they slide over the wood fibers with ease.
Regular cleaning and waxing of your board will ensure you have a beautiful, protected piece of wood to proudly display in your kitchen.
